Are you having trouble with turnover? The human service industry, including but not limited to autism centers, schools, and hospitals, has faced a major challenge over the last few years: Employee retention. High staff turnover has a significant impact on an organization in many areas, from limitations in building a successful team, to inability to create a learning organization.
Calculating the real cost of employee turnover is a key driver for organizations to get a handle on preventing the underlying causes of staff turnover. This infographic provides snap-shot of 10 preventable causes of staff turnover in human service settings.
In sum, there are several causes for employee turnover that are preventable, but each requires careful analysis of data, from external statistics and market analysis to internal employee exit interviews and social validity measures. This infographic highlights several aspects of an employee’s experience that can be impacted easily by many organizations: quality and quantity of training, lack of professional development opportunities, physical safety concerns, insufficient compensation, low quality supervision, insufficient growth opportunities, not enough appreciation, stressful cases, too much time spent on things other than their work, and excessive caseloads.
Once the organization identifies why employees are leaving, employee retention strategies can be implemented, which will more than likely requiring an organizational change management approach to ensure sustainable results. For each cause highlighted in the infographic, a solution is presented based on the field of organizational behavior management, or OBM for short. This is in no way an exhaustive list. Our goal for this infographic is to provide information, provide some value on how to improve employee retention, and provide a starting point to achieve long term success.
A 2003 article titled Turning Over Turnover written by Michael Strouse and colleagues in the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management summarized eloquently why focusing on turnover is so critical for organizations in the human services industry – organizations are “continuously challenged to create the highest quality program they can within the funding they receive. A stable, competent workforce is at the heart of any such program. A major problem faced (by organizations)…is how to recruit, train, and maintain this workforce.”
